Fantasy Based Reality

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a fan of the tv series 24. Apparently, the right wing is also a fan of the show as they have gone on record applauding the main character, Jack Bauer, for his defense of using torture against suspected terrorists during his congressional hearings at the start of season 7.

The difference between the right wing and myself is that I can separate fantasy from reality. Clearly, I do not agree with Mr. Bauer on this issue since I am unequivocally against the use of torture no matter the circustances, but I understand that it’s just a tv show. However, the right believes that it’s okay to use torture as long as it’s in the context of protecting the nation.

Torture is a violation of the Geneva Conventions and is a war crime. Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
