For the 18th year in a row, the United Nations called on the United States to put an end to its embargo against Cuba that has been in place since 1961. 187 countries voted in favor of ending US sanctions against Cuba and in a not surprising move, the United States and Israel, along with Palau voted against the resolution.
“The U.S. embargo against Cuba is putting at risk the lives of millions by preventing them from accessing vital medicines and medical technologies,” said Kerrie Howard, deputy director of Amnesty International’s Americas program. “These sanctions are immoral and should be lifted immediately.”
Among those affected significantly are Cuban children who are experiencing a high level of iron deficiency anemia. Congratulations, United States government, for strangling a country economically for almost 50 years and contributing to its children’s poor health!
