The People Have Spoken

Tomorrow night on the History Channel, The People Speak debuts. The show is a series of “dramatic and musical performances of the letters, diaries and speeches of everyday Americans” performed by musicians, actors, activists and so forth.

The show is based on two best selling books, A People’s History of the United States and Voices of a People’s History of the United States, written by historian, teacher, activist Howard Zinn.

Both books deal largely with the history of the United States from the perspective that other history books do not; Native Americans, the factory workers, African-Americans, etc. The books also talk about issues that academic history books fail to address such as Columbus’s tyranny, rape and slavery toward the natives when he first landed in the Americas in 1492.

The show airs at 8pm local time and 7pm central time.

  1. I meant to watch this, but I forgot. I saw Howard Zinn on Bill Moyer’s Journal on Friday talking about this show. Anyway, I’m sure the History Channel will repeat it. They always do.
