Lost for Words

The world will never hear another word spoken of Bo, which was one of the world’s oldest languages. News is being reported that the last person who spoke this language has passed away.

“According to leading linguist Professor Anvita Abbi, the death of Boa Sr from a unique tribe in the Andamans also led to the tragic demise of the world’s oldest languages — Bo.”

We often hear about species going extinct, but usually not language. Sadly, Ms. Sr found herself alone, having “to learn an Adamanese version of Hindi in order to communicate with people.”

For linguists, the loss of Bo means losing “a vital piece of the jigsaw” in the origins of ancient language.
