Today is Columbus Day here in the United States. The purpose of this blog post is not to question why we are honoring someone who enslaved the natives, allowed his men to rape the women and murdered thousands as he pursued gold for the Queen of Spain. Rather, we should look at it as an opportunity to see if things have really changed over the course of time, or if we continue to see needless violence permeating the world in the quest for power and resources. As the late Howard Zinn once said, it doesn’t do any good to harangue Columbus for what he did because we cannot go back in time and reverse his actions.
