It appears that in the United Arab Emerits (UAE), a man can beat the stuffing out of his wife and any of his children who are considered minors. Yeah, because you’re not a real man unless you beat up your wife and/or children. That is the message the UAE’s Federal Supreme Court is sending by upholding Article 53 of the UAE’s penal code.
Article 53 “acknowledges the right of a ‘chastisement by a husband to his wife and the chastisement of minor children’ so long as the assault does not exceed the limits prescribed by Shari’a. Similarly, article 56 of the UAE’s personal status code obligates women to ‘obey’ their husbands.”
Okay, men can’t just beat the stuffing out of their wives and children. It has to be within reason; even if your wife mouths off to your, or your children disobey your orders.
If you do exceed the reasonable limit, expect to face no more than a one year prison sentence and a fine “not to exceed 10,000 dirhams (US$2,722).”
Actually, now that I think about it, real men don’t beat up their wives and children. A real man takes care of his family and provides support to both his wife and children. Perhaps the UAE’s Federal Supreme Court should reconsider their decision and not allow domestic violence of this nature to take place; even if family members do not obey the patriarch.
