Planning for Rio de Janeiro

Here is an article I found on the BBC website about Amnesty International’s secretary general, Salil Shetty, talking about his concerns “over the forced removal of people from their homes in impoverished areas of Rio de Janeiro” for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

I have written about the behind the scenes look of what happens at the Olympics and World Cup that organizers don’t want the world to know here, here and here.

I also have written about how the Olympics bring no economic benefits to cities.

The city of Rio de Janeiro must be excited about hosting two huge events, but city officials probably won’t be too excited when they begin to see that it’s going run way over budget.

Hey, at least you have new buildings out of it, even if it’s at the expense of poor people who are bound to become homeless. Maybe they can live in the buildings that will only really be used once anyway.
