It appears three men have been arrested for the killing of a critically endangered mountain gorilla while “illegally poaching antelopes.” According to WWF, there are approximately 786–make that 785–mountain gorillas remaining in Uganda where the killing took place. If the men are indeed guilty of killing the gorillas and poaching antelopes, I do hope justice is served.
However, I see the arrests as a band-aid to a larger problem. The arrests will not truly address or even put an end to the continuing assault on the animals who share the planet with us. We live in a world where we treat animals as commodities rather than as living creatures. If we don’t change our behavior and our actions, then we can start saying goodbye to the mountain gorillas and other endangered species we have somehow managed to destroy.
