I have read a lot of bad things regarding human rights abuses in North Korea, so this story here doesn’t surprise me.
It may sound silly to the North Korean government but believe it or not, there are some people who do not enjoy or want to live under a repressive government, especially one that executes people trying “to flee poverty and political repression.”
China is just as guilty as its North Korean ally when it forces North Korean refugees back to North Korea, knowing full well what will happen to those brave enough to risk their lives to flee the country. Punishments are nothing short of severe, ranging from “torture to public execution.”
Perhaps it’s asking too much of the Chinese government to recognize these people as human beings. But then again, China’s government has its own fair share of human rights issues, so we shouldn’t expect it to extend an olive branch of friendship nor engage in any international human rights standards and protocols.
There is an old expression that birds of a feather flock together. When it comes to human rights abuses, China and North Korea definitely flock together.
